Herrick is proud to announce the recent publication of Dr. Susan Strong’s book, “Thought Knows No Sex.” The title of the book is taken from the writings of Jonathan Allen, President of Alfred University, in 1876.
In the book Dr. Strong explains how, at a time when coeducation was deeply controversial, Alfred University created a remarkably egalitarian environment for women. Grounded in nineteenth-century student experiences at Alfred University, the book uses diaries, letters, and recollections to tell of the excitement, hopes, and fears felt by some of the first women to aspire to higher education.
Published by SUNY Press, the book is available in the campus bookstore.
Susan Strong is a librarian at Herrick and will be retiring at the end of the semester. She will be greatly missed by her colleagues.

We would like your feedback on a new library resource.
Soon, we will be implementing a new Research by Subject portal. Please visit it and send your comments to Ellen Bahr at bahr@alfred.edu (or use the comment form, below).
Some features of the new page:
- View resources by subject
- View resources by type
- Search resources by keyword
- Get a list of multidisciplinary databases
This change will not be taking place until after this semester; the current Research by Subject page on the Herrick website will remain available until that time.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us!

Herrick recently added GreenFILE™, a bibliographic database of information about environmental concerns. The database includes information for individuals, such as installing solar panels and recycling; for corporation needing information on green agriculture, hybrid cars or waste management; as well as environmental laws, regulations and studies.
GreenFILE contains back-files of Bioscience, Journal of Environmental Planning & Management, Journal of Ecology, and Conservation Biology. The database also contains bibliographic information for non-scholarly publications such as E-The Environmental Magazine, Natural Life, and Mother Earth News.
In total, the database has nearly 300,000 records, some of which are full-text.

The AU Libraries have teamed up with the GreenAlfred organization to form a team for the upcoming Relay For Life event being held Friday, March 28th at McLane Center. The team has set a goal of raising $1000. They held a “Books, Bags and Bottles” event in the lobby of Herrick Library last week which raised $150. The team is still collecting returnable bottles and cans to raise even more. During the event the team will be staffing the concession stand from 7:30 - 8:30 pm. If you’re interested in joining or donating to our team, please contact team captain, Laurie McFadden at mcfadden@alfred.edu. Luminaries in memory or honor of specific individuals can also be purchased from McFadden for $5.00 each.
The libraries would like to encourage other campus offices to get involved in the Relay for Life event. It was a fun experience last year and we expect it to be even better this year.
