Why does the library…

June 14th, 2013

I think the library needs one or two computers in a very public spot that are always logged into the catalogue and can only be used for that purpose for both guests and older patrons. I think this is a more independent idea.

Herrick Library replies…
Thanks for your suggestion.

The trend is for more and more of our collection of book titles to be found online. In fact we have more titles available online than we have titles in print. At this point the Herrick Library catalog only provides information about our books in print. In order for library users to get access to everything we have, we have provided a new service, Summon, on the library home page. Summon provides access to everything the library can provide in one search, eliminating the need to do separate searches in the Herrick Catalog, the Scholes Catalog, and every potentially useful database. Summon can be a real time saver.

Library patrons use our workstations to find resources, collaborate with classmates on team projects, search the web for other kinds of information, and more. In the same way that we make our computer classroom available as a lab when classes are not in session, we want to make each workstation as versatile as possible. We want to help library users learn to use our new research tools effectively (and they can still choose to search only the catalog if they wish) rather than restrict the use of some of our work stations.

Thanks again for sharing your suggestion.

Sincerely,

Steve Crandall, Library Director
